Steve Ruksys is a Kingston artist who began carving in 1988. His draw to nature springs from a mischievous childhood in rural Northern Ontario, exploring the lakes, clambering up rocks and trudging through bush. A woodworking teacher by trade, carving birds, frogs and fish was a natural manifestation for his creativity. Steve ‘s focus has become fish, painted or driftwood, from minnows to 6’ pike.

Once the snow has melted, Steve heads for the shores of Lake Ontario where he finds his inspiration, and much of the wood and metal that he uses for his carvings. Through his art, he expresses his love and respect for nature.

His work can be found in private collections across North America and is currently at The Red Canoe Gallery in Port Carling, Ontario. His past exhibits in Toronto include: The Guild, The Painted Post, Up Country, DeFo Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, and The Moose Show.

Other past exhibits: The Muskoka Arts and Crafts Show, Bracebridge, Snow Goose Gallery, Ottawa, and The Cornerstone Arts and Crafts Gallery, Kingston.  His company name is “Joe Whitefish”.
